Shakarkandi (pronounced SHUCK- KUR - KUNN - DEE) is a popular snack food that is found in the streets of Pakistan and India. It is a roasted sweet potato that is sprinkled with chaat powder, spices, and lemon juice/tamarind.

Chaat Powder is a mixture of spicy, salty, and sour flavors. Although the chaat powder is delicious, it has an ‘interesting’ smell that it takes some getting used to. People often say that it has a rotten egg/sulphuric smell. This is due to the pungent-smelling spices such as Kala Namak / Himalayan Black Salt and Asafoetida that are part of the chaat powder mix. The term ‘chaat’ in Urdu refers to a savory snack. Chaat Powder can be made at home or store brought.

This is my easy recipe, which is a breeze to make. Baking the sweet potato is the most time-consuming part of this recipe!!

What you’ll need

  • 1 large sweet potato

  • 1/2 tsp chaat powder

  • 1/2 tsp Himalayan Salt (pink)

  • 1/4 tsp chili powder

  • 1 tsp tamarind chutney (home or store brought)

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.

  2. Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes well and pat them dry with a tea towel.

  3. Prick the sweet potato with a fork and place it in the oven for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Check the sweet potato, to see if it is cooked (inside should be soft). If it needs more time, put it back in the oven for 15 minutes

  5. Once the sweet potato is cooked, cut into cubes.

  6. Sprinkle potato with salt, chaat masala, and then spoon the chutney over the potatoes.
